is it possible to just travel to the followin places and survive on 5000 baht ? i am willing to ride bicycles , eat worms and sleep on termite infested beds. i am bringing a likeminded friend with me who also has a 5000 Bht budget for spending in thailand.

Suggest you put off trip until you have at least 5500BHT so you can party a little, also thiswill give the worms a little more time to fatten up

possible, especially if you and your buddy share a room every night, travel on local buses and eat on the street, ration your beer and stay away from the girls. won't leave much of a budget for fun stuff. why pattaya? if you want seaside, cha am or hua hin might be a better alternative for low budget travel. BKK is expensive, but walking is free and there is a lot to see. chiang mai is a great town for living cheaply.

You can do it easy. Street food, dormitory accomodation and go easy on the beer and women. Use local buses and hire bicycles- you will have no problems.

Very possible - it is easy to find rock-bottom accommodation and food as well as local transport. The anomaly here is Pattaya - it's whole raison d'etre is sex and booze - which you have to pay for. If you do you're over your budget, if you don't you just have a dirty beach and tacky life going on around you. In fact in Bangkok and Pattaya you have two of the three most expensive parts of Thailand on your itinery - with a little exploration you can find peaceful places to relax and spend little. There are much better places to swing on a hammock and enjoy the simple pleasures.

Are people joking? With travel costs (train/bus) 5000 baht seems to be pushing it a little. If your point-to-point costs are not included in this then, yes, it's possible, but unless you plan on walking Thailand....I don't think so.

OP, try a similar itinerary in India:
Kolkata - Delhi - Jaipur - Delhi - Agra - Delhi for 5500 Rupies AND HAVE FUN!

Sorry - istead of Delhi it should be Kolkata as landing point to give you a kind of comparison. Never forgetting the prepaid taxi driver in Kolkata who asked me for 30 additional Rupies for using a SHORTCUT...

#6 state run bus to CM around 400baht or so, less on non-AC. local bus to cha am/hua hin/pattaya less than 100 baht, acommodation as low as 150 baht a night split 2 ways, eat on the street as low as 10 baht a meal, walking everywhere or taking the bus in bkk, foregoing all the fun stuff that costs money=POSSIBLE. i figure you could get by with an average of 500 baht a day for 10 days and not even go hungry. however, there is a big difference between possibility and probability. most people plan on a budget of around $20-$25 a day for budget travel, so of course they will be pushing it. as a first time traveler in thailand, just the sheer effort to find places to eat for 10 baht, figure out how to get around on local buses, etc. will PROBABLY wear them thin and they will go over budget. not to mention the temptations of all the fun stuff they will miss. so...he asked "Possible?" and the answer is yes. probable (or very comfortable)? no. that airport tax will be a killer on the way out though.
